What the World Sikh Council is

The World Sikh Council is a nonprofit public benefit corporation registered in the State of California and recognised by the Internal Revenue Service as a public charity under section 501(c)(3). Its federal Employer Identification Number is 99-1948555. Donations are tax-deductible in the United States to the extent the law allows.

The Council's registered office is at 5890 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 109, Pleasanton, California 94588. Its work is centred on Stockton and the Central Valley, home to the first gurdwara in the United States.

Our motto is short: Unite Sikhs. Serve Humanity.

How it is led

The Council is built on the Panj Piare tradition. In 1699 Guru Gobind Singh Ji called for five who would give everything, and then placed the community's authority above his own person by taking amrit from the very five he had initiated. That is the model: leadership by five chosen servants who decide together, not by one president.

There are no political parties involved, and the Council takes no political positions. Its constitution bars it from doing so, and its work in Punjab depends on that line holding.

What we exist to do

The Council's objectives, from its constitution:

• To live and teach the three pillars of Sikh life: honest work, remembrance of the Divine, and sharing what we earn.
• To raise children with strong character and the spirit of the saint-soldier, and to encourage them toward higher education.
• To work for a society free of drugs and in good health.
• To help families in need, including the marriage of daughters from poor families and food for those hit by disaster.
• To stand against caste and discrimination in every form.
• To keep every account open: every dollar received is spent on the panth and the wider community, and the books are there for anyone to see.

The people behind the Council have carried this seva for years, in California and in Punjab. The Council exists to organise that work, support it the right way, and grow it.

Common questions

Is the World Sikh Council the same as the World Sikh Council America Region?

No. The World Sikh Council America Region is a separate organisation founded in 1999. The Global Sikh Council is separate again. This Council is a California nonprofit incorporated in 2024, with its own board, EIN and programmes.

Is a donation tax-deductible?

Yes, in the United States, as a gift to a 501(c)(3) public charity, to the extent the law allows. You will receive a receipt. This is general information, not tax advice.

Where does the money go?

To the work described on this site. The Council's commitment is that every account is open: the books will be inspected on a fixed schedule and audited once a year, and what came in and what it was spent on will be published where anyone can read it.
